New recycling system for residual concrete at
Steypustöðin in Iceland

The Steypustöðin company had already started operations in 1947, thus paving the way for civil engineering in Iceland. Since that time, the production of fresh concrete as well as of concrete slabs and precast concrete elements have been among the main fields of business of the concrete plant. The manufacturer is continuously working on product developments and the introduction of innovations in the production process, what was reason for the decision to invest in a recycling system for residual concrete made by the supplier Bibko, that has been put into operation now.

A Bibko ComTec 30 system delivered

The delivered Bibko ComTec 30 recycling system provides a recycling capacity of 30m³/h and is additionally equipped with an external bucket conveyor, allowing for additional feeding of material at ground level. The residual concrete being washed-out is either discharged directly from the truck mixer to the feeding hopper of the washout system or is fed into the hopper of the bucket wheel at floor level by means of concrete pumps. The solids > 0.2 mm are washed out in the washing trough, then being discharged. Water containing the smaller fine particles first drains through the water outlet into a so-called sump pit, where it is then pumped into the agitator basin with the aid of the integrated 2.0 kW pump. The basin, likewise delivered and installed by Bibko, is provided with an agitator keeping the fine particles contained in the residual water in suspension by cyclic agitation, thus avoiding sedimentation. As the basin is installed above ground, a sump including pump is interstaged. Owing to the prevailing temperature and weather conditions in Iceland, it was provided with cladding and insulation in order to assure the functioning of the pump even at temperatures down to -40 degrees Celsius.

The actual washing-out unit is equipped with a 3 m wide feeding hopper and a swiveling washing jib, so that two truck mixers can wash out at the same time. A 3 m long spiral conveyor provides for an ideal discharge of the washed-out materials.

Prior to the supply, a corresponding project planning phase took place during which the demands and the local conditions of the customer were taken into account.

Bibko systems are characterized by their highly efficient drive technology. Hence, high savings in relation to the consumption of energy and wear and tear will pay off for the customer. In this way, the new Bibko recycling system meets the customer‘s environmental policy too.
