“Think Concrete, Go Precast!” – Innovative Approaches to Sustainable Construction
The 25th edition of the BIBM Congress will take place in Rome from May 20 to 22, 2026. As the leading European platform for the precast concrete industry, the event will once again bring together key players in the sector. In an interview with BFT International, Dr. Ulrich Lotz and Michael Voss, CEOs of BCF - Building Congress Forum GmbH, as well as Denny Bakirtzis, Head of Congress & Exhibition Organization, explain the unique features of the event and its role in the European context.
BFT International: Dr. Lotz, Mr. Voss – the BIBM Congress will mark its 25th edition in 2026. What significance does this anniversary hold for the industry?
Michael Voss: For decades, the BIBM Congress has been the most important European industry gathering for the precast concrete industry. The 25th edition underscores this continuity while also demonstrating how significantly the industry has evolved. Today, it is no longer just about technical solutions, but about the major issues of our time - sustainability, digitalization, and resilience.
Dr. Ulrich Lotz: At the same time, the core remains unchanged: The congress brings together the relevant stakeholders - industry, research, planning, and politics. It is precisely this exchange that is crucial for actively shaping the transformation of construction.
BFT International: When we look at this transformation: What role does the BIBM itself play in it?
Dr. Ulrich Lotz: The BIBM is the central European voice of the precast concrete industry. It represents the sector before European institutions, contributes to standardization processes, and ensures that the specific advantages of precast construction are incorporated into political and regulatory developments.
BFT International: This European perspective is also reflected in the congress. What role do your partners play in this?
Michael Voss: A very central one. The congress would not be possible in this form without the commitment of our partners. With Assobeton, we have a strong national host that does an excellent job of integrating the Italian industry.
Equally important is the IPHA as a co-organizer and dedicated partner that brings its international expertise to the table.
Dr. Ulrich Lotz: In addition, we benefit from close cooperation with European associations such as the Belgian Precast Concrete Association (FEBE). These networks ensure that the congress truly reflects the entire European perspective - both technically and strategically.
BFT International: Mr. Bakirtzis, this European breadth is also reflected in the program. What exactly can participants expect?
Denny Bakirtzis: The program is structured around the industry’s key future topics. Among other things, we’ll cover decarbonization, the circular economy, digitalization, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
BFT International: In addition to the technical program, the exhibition traditionally plays an important role. How does it fit into the overall concept?
Denny Bakirtzis: The exhibition is a central component of the congress. It showcases the latest technologies and innovations from the automotive supply industry. Of particular importance are the innovation workshops, where companies can present their solutions in a concise and practical manner.
BFT International: The congress will take place in Rome in 2026. Why was this location chosen?
Michael Voss: Rome is a city that embodies architectural culture like no other - from antiquity to the modern era. This blend of tradition and innovation fits perfectly with the congress’s theme.
Dr. Ulrich Lotz: Yes, and Rome is, after all, the place where the history of concrete began: “Back to the roots”, so to speak. In addition, the venue offers ideal conditions for an international professional event. And last but not least, the city itself provides a special setting for networking and personal encounters.
BFT International: Speaking of encounters - what role does the supporting program play?
Denny Bakirtzis: Events such as the gala dinner at Terrazza Caffarelli or the guided city tours offer ideal opportunities for informal exchanges. The supporting program has always been a deliberate and integral part of the congress.
BFT International: Dr. Lotz, to conclude, a personal question: What motivates you personally to have been so deeply committed to the BIBM Congress for so many years?
Dr. Ulrich Lotz: Above all, I am inspired by the dynamism of this industry. The construction sector faces enormous challenges—and at the same time, great opportunities. The BIBM Congress is one of the few places where you can experience this development in its full breadth.
And on a personal note: It is always inspiring to see people from different countries and disciplines coming together to develop solutions collaboratively.
BFT International: So, a European platform for the precast concrete industry and its suppliers. Thank you very much for the interview, and best of luck in Rome!
