Extensive rehabilitation project: Concrete repair of a heritage-protected bell tower

The bell tower of the Bugenhagen Church in Hanover, an extraordinary concrete building from the 1960s, has now been rehabilitated comprehensively. System solutions made by StoCretec were selected for the works on the heritage-protected tower with a filigree load-bearing structure.

Extensive repair works were unavoidable

On the bell tower of Bugenhagen Church in the south of Hanover, time has left its visible marks on the concrete structure after more than 60 years. The professional inspection of the building structure led to the fact that an extensive rehabilitation was unavoidable.

Repair mortar, coating system & foundation protection

In the first step, the damaged areas on the concrete surface of the tower were exposed in a sandblasting process. The skilled workers repaired these spots using the StoConcrete Repair Prime TG 203 system, which includes the StoCrete TG 203 repair mortar. This mortar is processed manually – at the tower not only on local damaged spots, but also on large areas. The repair mortar of class R4 is generally suitable for surface areas, small repair works and for reprofiling of edges and is easy to mold – even overhead. The concrete substitute system is characterized by high fire resistance, high compressive strength and a low capillary water absorption.

Afterwards, the bell tower was painted with the StoConcrete Protect Elastic RB acrylic coating system that is weatherproof and resistant to aging. Now, this coating protects the concrete structure against environmental impacts permanently: It has a dynamic crack-bridging property, is UV-resistant and is also resilient in the spraying zone of de-icing salts.

The protection of the foundation is designed for the highest loading – using StoConcrete Protect Elastic FB. This system is statically and dynamically crack-bridging and absorbs only little water. It is moreover characterized by high resistance to alkali, UV, weathering and aging.

The Bugenhagen Church in Hanover
The Bugenhagen Church in the south of Hanover was designed by the architect Werner Dierschke (Karlsruhe) and was consecrated in 1962. Since 2015, it is a cultural monument. The 42 meters high bell tower is hosting four church bells in a distinctive, octagonal belfry that can be reached by slender spiral staircase. The tower framing consists of two crossing lattice girders.
