Schöck Expands Sconnex Family with Solution for Round Reinforced Concrete Columns

Schöck Bauteile GmbH is expanding its Sconnex product family with a solution for the thermal separation of round reinforced concrete columns. This opens up additional possibilities for energy-efficient and architecturally sophisticated building concepts. In addition, the company offers the free planning manual “Walls and Columns,” designed to guide planners through all project phases.

According to the company, approximately 40% of all structural thermal bridges occur in walls and columns. The Sconnex elements are installed in the connection detail between the reinforced concrete slab or floor slab and the column or wall, enabling a continuous thermal insulation layer, for example in underground garages, basements, or on facade projections.

Round Columns with Sconnex P

Round columns are considered a classic architectural design element. With this new product variant, Schöck is expanding its existing Sconnex P range. Until now, square reinforced concrete columns ranging from 250 x 250 mm to 400 x 400 mm, as well as rectangular columns with a column depth-to-width ratio of up to 2:1, could be constructed.

The new Sconnex P variant is initially available with a diameter of 300 mm. A version with a 400 mm diameter is scheduled to be available starting in June 2026. According to the company, this opens up additional possibilities for designing slender columns and exposed concrete solutions. Sconnex P for round reinforced concrete columns has also received approval from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt).

The Sconnex Family

According to the company, Sconnex reduces heat loss by up to 80%. Additionally, side insulation is no longer required, allowing for exposed concrete surfaces and additional space gains. Even complex building geometries are said to be easy to implement structurally.

Furthermore, Schöck highlights building physics benefits such as protection against condensation and mold. According to the approval, the influence of the column connection with Sconnex P may be neglected when calculating heat transmission loss. Additionally, costs can be reduced by eliminating the need for side insulation and plaster.

Additional Applications

In addition to the new version of Sconnex P, the product family includes other solutions for various applications.

Sconnex W is used for the thermal separation of reinforced concrete walls. The pressure bearing made of ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete transfers high forces over a small area and is used at the base of the wall on floor slabs or ground slabs, as well as at the top of the wall below floor slabs.

Sconnex M is a header block for the base insulation of masonry walls. It is used as the first row of masonry blocks above or below floor slabs or ground slabs and reduces the resulting thermal bridge.

Design Manual for Architects and Planners

In addition, Schöck offers the “Wall and Column” design manual in both print and digital formats. This reference work is intended for architects and designers and contains practical information for design and construction.
