With its latest Sustainability Report 2024, Mapei demonstrates that sustainable thinking and action characterise all areas of the company's activities – from social initiatives to culture and sport to research and training.
Mapei has published its ninth sustainability report, which for the third time covers all 59 countries in which the company operates. In an ever-changing world, companies face an increasing number of challenges in the areas of climate, energy and social responsibility. The Mapei Group is responding to these challenges with concrete measures and promoting a culture of sustainability that takes ecological, social and economic factors into account.
"For us, sustainability is a genuine commitment that encompasses all areas of our activity – from social initiatives to culture, from sport to research and education. We believe in the value of people, the power of knowledge and the importance of sharing. That's why we invest in projects that have a positive impact on communities, promote responsible innovation and support initiatives that improve quality of life. This is our approach: we work with passion and expertise, always looking to the future," says Veronica Squinzi, CEO of Mapei.
"The construction sector is one of the industries with the greatest impact on the environment and is responsible for a significant proportion of global CO₂ emissions. At Mapei, we are committed to changing the way we build by promoting a culture of sustainability based on responsibility, innovation and quality. We invest in research and development to offer environmentally friendly, durable and innovative solutions. For us, innovation means improving the quality of construction, respecting the environment and actively contributing to the ecological transformation of the industry," adds Marco Squinzi, CEO of Mapei.
In 2024, Mapei invested £39.8 million in cultural, sporting and solidarity initiatives.
Reducing emissions
One of the most significant examples is the expansion of the Zero line, which now includes 230 products whose residual CO₂ emissions – amounting to 300,000 tonnes in 2024 alone – have been fully offset by certified environmental credits. This commitment is reflected in the support of reforestation and biodiversity protection projects and makes an active contribution to the fight against climate change.
A key role is played by Mapei's environmental sustainability team, based at the company's research centre in Milan, which is dedicated exclusively to the environmental sustainability of products and processes. The team measures the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle using life cycle analysis (LCA), the results of which are recorded in certified documents – known as environmental product declarations (EPDs) – which are now available for more than 80% of Mapei products.
In addition, the team encourages laboratories to develop products with an increasingly lower environmental impact by seeking solutions to reduce the consumption of raw materials and increase the proportion of recycled materials already in the formulation phase.
However, Mapei's environmental initiatives are not limited to its products. The company is continuously improving the energy efficiency of its production processes by installing photovoltaic systems in its factories, which has reduced CO₂ emissions by over 1,600 tonnes – another step towards more efficient and environmentally friendly production.
A shared commitment
The group closed 2024 with consolidated sales of €4.4 billion. This result was made possible by the commitment of more than 13,000 employees worldwide who make up the Mapei team and are always at the heart of the company's strategy. In addition to training programmes, professional development and social initiatives, Mapei promotes a fair, inclusive and performance-oriented working environment. This is reflected in the updated Code of Ethics, which reaffirms the principles of respect, inclusion and appreciation of diversity as fundamental pillars of the corporate culture.
This vision gave rise to the ‘A Day for Others’ initiative – the first corporate project for voluntary work by employees at the Milan branch. It invites them to use part of their working time for social initiatives. The programme offers the opportunity to take two half-days of paid leave per year to actively and voluntarily participate in the activities of charitable organisations in Milan, including: Pane Quotidiano, Opera San Francesco and Recup.
Investment in research
Sustainable innovation also means collaborating with the academic world. For example, Mapei has collaborated with the University of Brescia to research new solutions for low-emission concrete and to test geopolymers and hybrid reinforcements that enable high mechanical performance and CO₂ reductions of up to 66%.
The Mapegrout Easy Flow Zero mortar was tested with the University of Naples Federico II to improve the durability of structures exposed to dynamic loads. The results, which were also confirmed by tests carried out in Australia in collaboration with the University of Queensland, show how research and innovation can make construction more sustainable.
Close to communities
Sustainability also means building authentic connections with communities and making a positive impact on the daily lives of people around the world.
In Italy, Mapei continues to support the Fondazione AIRC, the country's leading non-profit organisation for funding independent cancer research. Mapei Romania supports the Ascendis association, which is committed to improving education through career guidance programmes, workshops for teachers, scholarships and training courses.
On National Day, Mapei Indonesia Construction Products, in collaboration with a local foundation, donated wheelchairs to people with disabilities. During the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, Mapei Suisse, in collaboration with the GreenHope Foundation, organised an event for children with cancer.
Passion for sport
Mapei continues to invest in sport with passion, determination and team spirit – values that shape the company's growth and are reflected in the stories of athletes and teams worldwide.
In football, Mapei supports Sassuolo Calcio in Italy, Club Atlético Lans in Argentina and Grazer Athletiksport-Klub in Austria. The connection to cycling also continues to grow: Mapei was the main partner of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling World Championships in Zurich.
In the United Kingdom, the company supports the Halesowen Cycling Club, in Australia the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, and in Singapore it participated in the OCBC Cycle 2024 with over 50 customers, employees and their families.
From cycling to motorsport: Mapei's involvement in the world of car racing is growing. In addition to supporting racing driver Rachele Somaschini, Mapei is one of the new official sponsors of Toyota Gazoo Racing Italy in the Italian Rally Championship. The company is also continuing its offshore sailing project with Ambrogio Beccaria, the world-renowned Milanese sailor.
Love of culture
‘Mapei for Culture’ is more than just a slogan – it represents the group's long-standing commitment to promoting architectural and artistic heritage. This project is based on the spirit of restoration and responsibility for the common good.
Mapei is involved in the restoration of important buildings such as Notre-Dame Cathedral and collaborates with renowned cultural institutions such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Mosaic Association Australia and New Zealand (MAANZ), which is supported by Mapei Oceania.
Numerous exhibitions have been sponsored worldwide: Mapei Hellas supported an exhibition of rare ceramics and posters by the artist Pablo Picasso, organised by the European Cultural Centre in Delphi. The subsidiary Vinavil sponsored an exhibition in honour of the Milanese artist Enrico Baj at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, and Mapei renewed its collaboration with the San Domenico Museum in Forlì for the ninth consecutive year.
Training for the future
Promoting a sustainable building culture also means investing in education and sharing knowledge, techniques and technologies.
Mapei implements this commitment through its Mapei Academy, which offered around 59,639 hours of technical training to more than 332,000 participants in 2024. In addition, there were over 272,000 hours of training for employees – equivalent to around 21 hours per person.
This confirms a strategy that focuses on professional growth and the further development of skills – for a better informed and more responsible construction industry.
