Digital and automated construction methods are becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. In particular, 3D concrete printing is evolving from an innovative idea into a practical construction method that can standardize, accelerate, and partially automate building processes. With Peri 3D Construction GmbH, Solid Unit now welcomes a new member that is actively driving this development forward with concrete projects and technological expertise.
“The addition of Peri 3D Construction expands our network with important insights from the field of digital construction and strengthens the exchange of ideas on innovative methods in masonry construction. We look forward to working together!” says Thomas Zawalski, Managing Director of Solid Unit e.V.
Effects on construction time, labor requirements, and flexibility
3D concrete printing enables the production of concrete structures directly from digital models and eliminates the need for traditional formwork. This fundamentally changes planning and manufacturing processes: Digital models become the central basis for execution, materials can be used more precisely, and individual work steps can be automated. This has implications for construction time, labor requirements, and flexibility in the design of building components and entire structures.
Projects in Germany and France
In France, Peri recently completed an apartment building that underscores the method’s applicability in standard construction workflows. In Heidelberg, three “Dreihaus” residential buildings with a total of 21 residential units are currently being constructed using 3D printing. With Dreihaus, apartment buildings are expected to be printed 30% faster and 10% more cost-effectively, which is considered an important milestone for serial application.
For widespread application
At the same time, Peri 3D Construction is working to build on this experience and bring the technology to widespread application. This includes the further development of printing systems, the formulation of printable concrete, integration into digital planning processes, and collaboration with regulatory authorities and research institutions. A central issue here is how automated production steps can be meaningfully combined with traditional trades.
“At Peri 3D Construction, we are delighted to be part of Solid Unit and to continue driving forward innovative solid construction together with our partners in the network,” explains Jan Graumann, CCO & CFO of Peri 3D Construction GmbH. “With our approach to 3D building printing, we are introducing new technologies and construction processes into the discussion that can make a significant contribution to greater productivity and cost-effectiveness. We are convinced that the major challenges facing the construction industry—from rising costs and declining productivity to the shortage of skilled workers—cannot be solved by regulatory measures alone. What is crucial is open exchange and collaboration across the entire value chain. This is precisely where we see the added value of Solid Unit, and we look forward to jointly developing solutions.”
Solid Unit connects stakeholders from the construction sector, the building materials industry, academia, research, professional associations, and startups. The goal is to drive innovation in masonry construction and strengthen the transfer of knowledge between research, practice, and policy.
