New on the market: Concrete roadway dividers

Section 1 of the Road Traffic Act requires that „all road users must behave in such a way that no one else is harmed, endangered or obstructed or inconvenienced more than is unavoidable under the circumstances“. Traffic areas such as parking lots, sidewalks, bike paths, and roadways that are used equally by several participants in a confined space offer many potential hazards in this regard. In order to ensure adequate safety for all road users in such applications, the Hermann Meudt concrete block factory in Wallmerod has developed a curbstone that makes it easy to separate the various areas used by road users.

In line with its function, the specialist for traffic guidance systems from the Westerwald region calls this flat curbstone a „lane separator“. Ute Feuerstake from Meudt explains the special feature: „Basically, this is a completely normal flat curb. Unlike usual, however, this concrete block has a 45-degree bevel on both sides.“ The stone is 25 cm high and 30 cm wide, with a construction length of 50 cm. The run-up is 7 cm on each side. This results in a flat footprint of 16 cm. „This is large enough to insert guide flags or glass markers for better visibility,“ Feuerstake explains. „It was also important to us not to make the stone wider than 30 cm. That way, it remains easy to handle at a good 80 kg and is still 10 cm narrower than a flat curb set back-to-back in FB 20 x 20 format, because the latter measures 40 cm wide. And because road space is often tight, this is indeed a considerable advantage,“ says Feuerstake.

Paving: conventional or bonded

Compared to lane separation solutions, where stones are placed back-to-back, there is another advantage. Ute Feuerstake explains: „The installation of the bricks is much faster because only one work step is required. The special curbs are installed either conventionally in concrete or as adhesive curbs. „This solution is very popular, because in this case the stones, which have previously been cut to a desired height at the factory, are simply bonded directly to the existing roadway,“ says Feuerstake. „The bonding with 2-part plastic is very lasting within the process.“

Good traffic guidance effect due to Reflexin coating

To create a good traffic guidance effect, the stone is not only available in gray or white, but also with a so-called Reflexin coating. In this case, a white-reflective epoxy resin is applied at the factory in several work steps. The evenly applied layer and the subsequent uniform curing ensure a long-lasting product with a reflective effect. At the same time, the concrete element is additionally protected against weathering.
