Baustahlgewebe Becomes a Network Partner of Solid Unit

Baustahlgewebe GmbH is Solid Unit’s newest network partner. The company is part of the RSE Group, which manufactures reinforcing steel products for reinforced concrete construction. The steel used for this is produced from recycled steel scrap. The RSE Group’s product range includes reinforcing steel bars, rings, and mesh, as well as steel trusses. The steel is produced at the group’s electric steel mill in Kehl. There, up to 2.5 million metric tons of steel are produced annually from recycled steel scrap. The steel is then further processed into reinforcement products at the group’s wire drawing plants.
Steel Production in an Electric Arc Furnace
The steel scrap is melted down in Kehl in an electric arc furnace. According to Solid Unit, this process generates approximately 80% fewer CO₂ emissions than the traditional blast furnace route.
According to the press release, the plant in Kehl is among the most productive and efficient electric arc furnace steel mills in Germany. Citing international emissions data, Solid Unit also states that it ranks third among the world’s lowest-emission electric arc furnace steel mills. It is the only steel mill in Baden-Württemberg.
“What impresses me about production in Kehl is the continuous material cycle: scrap becomes steel, steel becomes rebar—and in the end, it supports the concrete. Baustahlgewebe demonstrates what such a cycle can look like on an industrial scale,” explains Thomas Zawalski, managing director of Solid Unit.
Dr. Christian Piehl, Managing Director of Baustahlgewebe GmbH, adds: “We give steel scrap a new life and turn it into a material that will last for generations. For us, that is the value of a circular approach to raw materials.”
