The freeze-thaw damage pattern of concrete is primarily linked to the water contained in the pore system, which is also referred to as the saturation level. If a certain critical saturation level is exceeded, micro-cracking will occur even within a single or very few freeze-thaw cycles and lead to progressive destruction of the concrete matrix. It is thus crucial to quantify the influence of freeze-thaw cycling on the saturation level of the pore system in the concrete in order to develop a forecast model to predict freeze-thaw resistance.
