The key to erasing waste and achieving a more circular economy lies within smart product development. This has driven Peikko to develop circular solutions for columns and walls, as well as bolted connections that are designed for disassembly and re-use.
Additionally, the circular principles must be applied to Peikko’s own manufacturing processes, where hybrid construction components such as PETRA® Green and DELTABEAM® Green are made using recycled waste materials.
While these green credentials are key to delivering on Peikko’s sustainability goals, they must also be combined with ease of design and erection, making the construction process quicker and safer for all concerned, from construction workers to end users.
Circular Columns and Walls with Shoes Designed for Disassembly
Peikko's HPKM® and BOLDA® Column Shoes and SUMO® Wall Shoe connections represent new possibilities for multi-storey construction projects. A robust release system also covering the adjacent reinforcement, and a more sophisticated set of grout types and processes, ensure speed, safety and efficiency for building, dismantling, and re-building several times.
Simplicity in design lowers the workload of structural designers thanks to standardised and pre-engineered products, alongside user-friendly design tools. Columns can be efficiently connected to foundations, beams or other columns, and wall connections achieved with foundations and other precast wall elements.
Installation is just as quick and easy, as the beauty of a bolted, mechanical connection is the requirement for a smaller crew on site, with no temporary bracing needed. As soon as the nuts are tightened, the connection is moment-resistant and the crane can move on to the next column.
Tested, reliable and safe, once completed, the bolted connections are just as stiff as traditional cast-in-situ connections. By enabling the reuse and recycling of structural elements, bolted connections minimize material waste and contribute to the circular economy ethos of "prevent, minimise, reuse and recycle."
Reducing Construction’s Carbon Footprint: DELTABEAM® Green and PETRA® Green
Made from 90% and 64% recycled materials respectively, DELTABEAM® Green and PETRA® Green are Peikko's eco-friendly alternative to traditional steel beams and slab hangers. This extends to their manufacture using renewable energy, and transport with reduced emissions.
These environmental impacts are backed up by Environmental Product Declarations, making them the perfect answer in projects aiming for high BREEAM or LEED standards. CO2 emissions are cut by up to 50% for DELTABEAM® Green when compared to standard steel, composite, or concrete beams, and up to 43% when comparing PETRA® Green to standard slab hangers.
In both cases, the more environmentally friendly variants of these products make no compromise on the performance and benefits of their standard versions. Together, they contribute towards greater flexibility and efficiency in building design, with slimmer floor structures, longer spans and open spaces.
