Rohrdorfer has increased the capacity of the CO₂ capture pilot plant at the Rohrdorf cement plant to up to 99 percent. Instead of the previous 900 kg per day, up to two metric tons of CO₂ can now be captured daily. This was made possible by a second absorption column, which was successfully installed in March. The second column is installed directly behind the first. The flue gas flows through the columns in sequence, thereby increasing its contact time with the amine scrubbing solution contained within them. The CO₂-laden amine scrubbing solution is drawn off at the bottom of the columns for regeneration. The solution is then purified and reused multiple times.

Oxygen Removal Extends the Service Life of the Amine Wash Solution

To improve CO₂ quality and further extend the service life of the wash solution, an Andritz oxystripper has been in use since early July. This unit removes physically bound oxygen from the amine by creating a vacuum. At the same time, further optimization steps can significantly reduce the oxygen concentration. The Oxystripper achieves a reduction in oxygen concentration of approximately 90 percent.

Significant Progress Toward CO₂ Storage Requirements

“Since the capture plant went online, we have been consistently working to further increase the plant’s performance and energy efficiency. With the second column and the Oxystripper, we have reached an important milestone in this effort. At the same time, we have succeeded in further improving the CO₂ quality through these measures and have come significantly closer to meeting the very challenging requirements for storage,” says Christian Räthel, Head of CCUS at the Rohrdorfer Net Zero Emission Team.
