Heidelberg Materials Mineralik DE GmbH and Aktiengesellschaft für Steinindustrie (Steinag) have established a new company under the name Volcano GmbH & Co. KG, focusing on the extraction, processing, and distribution of natural pozzolanic raw materials.
The goal of the joint venture is to make pozzolanic raw materials such as tuff and phonolite available, particularly for cement production, thereby contributing to the further development of clinker-reduced cements. Heidelberg Materials Mineralik and Steinag each hold a 50% stake in the new company.
Toward a more circular economy
“Volcano is an important building block for us on the path toward a more circular economy and the gradual decarbonization of cement production,” explains Philip Cordes, Managing Director of Recycling & Circular Economy at Heidelberg Materials Mineralik. “Through long-term access to pozzolanic raw materials, we are increasing our raw material flexibility and creating a stable foundation for clinker-reduced cements.
Heidelberg Materials Mineralik is a subsidiary of Heidelberg Materials AG in Germany and brings its comprehensive expertise in raw materials, processes, and markets to the joint venture. Steinag is a family-run company with deep regional roots in the Eifel region and many years of experience in the extraction of mineral raw materials. It has access to several deposits with significant reserves of natural pozzolans such as tuff and phonolite.
Many years of experience in the extraction of mineral raw materials
“With Volcano, we are bringing our many years of experience in the extraction of mineral raw materials to a strong partnership,” says Cornelius Kirsche, CEO of Steinag. “Together with Heidelberg Materials Mineralik, we are opening up new applications for natural pozzolans while simultaneously strengthening the regional raw materials approach. The joint venture represents a logical step with which we are further developing our resources in a sustainable and future-oriented manner while also purposefully driving forward the diversification of our group of companies.”
Operations at Volcano GmbH & Co. KG, where both Cornelius Kirsche and Philip Cordes serve as managing directors, commenced retroactively as of April 1, 2026. With the founding of Volcano, Heidelberg Materials Mineralik and Steinag are sending a joint signal in support of collaborative partnership, regional raw material extraction, and the transformation of the building materials industry toward greater sustainability.
