Fast, construction-time-flexible, and column-free installation of precast balconies

For fast, construction-time-flexible, and cost-effective construction, Schöck offers solutions for connecting precast components to buildings – such as the Schöck Isokorb IQ K. This load-bearing thermal insulation element enables installation with flexible construction schedules. Initial test runs demonstrate the potential of this development for modern multi-story residential construction. Freely cantilevered reinforced concrete balconies can be hoisted into place using a crane and installed within minutes.
As in many major cities, Berlin is facing a housing shortage, which is being addressed through modern multi-story residential construction. Under the leadership of DIBAG Industriebau AG, buildings with a total of 483 apartments are currently being constructed on four construction sites in the Wehrmathen residential area in Berlin-Schönefeld. Most of the apartments feature balconies.

Test Application: Glöckle Chooses Schöck Isokorb IQ

In search of cost-effective solutions, the Glöckle construction group from Schweinfurt took the opportunity to install the Schöck Isokorb IQ for the first time in Germany. Two balconies on the top floor were selected for this purpose. In consultation with Schöck, feasibility was assessed and the construction plans for the floor slab and precast elements were adapted. Implementation took place following approval by the structural engineer.

Solution for modern residential construction

Peter Pichler, senior site manager at Glöckle, sees advantages in the Schöck Isokorb IQ in terms of planning flexibility. Thanks to a dry bolted connection, the component enables the retroactive, thermally bridged connection of precast balconies to new buildings.

Furthermore, the system expands design possibilities, as it facilitates a staggered arrangement of balconies and allows for connection even at greater heights without scaffolding. The balcony connection can be carried out flexibly in terms of timing, without scaffolding or support, and in a bundled manner. These characteristics make the system attractive for serial and modular construction methods.

Installation Procedure

For dry connection with Schöck Isokorb IQ, the prefabricated balconies are lifted into place and positioned using a crane. The connection is made via tie rods that have been previously embedded in the floor slab. The balcony and floor slab are bolted together within recesses on the floor slab or balcony side - depending on the variant.

The connection can be made in about five minutes. The balcony can then be loaded immediately. The Schöck Isokorb IQ is available in variants A (recesses on the floor slab side) and B (recesses on the balcony side).

Results

The installation of the test balconies confirmed the planned procedures. “Everyone was surprised by the speed of installation. Within 15 minutes, the balcony was connected, from lifting to final assembly,” said Peter Pichler.

The structural shell can be completed independently of the delivery of the prefabricated components, while balcony installation is carried out in batches at a later date.
