The facade of the 17-story German headquarters of French oil corporation Total is not just an “off-the-shelf” architectural concrete facade. More than 80 different element designs were used on the ground floor and first floor alone, which were to be thoroughly dealt with in terms of both design and engineering to meet the extremely demanding client specifications.

The two considered options included a conventional metal façade with the associated angular elements and an architectural concrete facade whose feasibility was yet to be verified in many respects....
