According to calculations by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW), at least 310,000 dwelling units annually would have to be constructed by 2020 in Germany. Living space is scarce, especially in heavily populated urban centers. The construction industry is thus facing major challenges that cannot be met with conventional construction methods alone. In this situation rethinking is required.
