New potentials for the precast industry through the use of innovative carbon reinforcement

In aerospace engineering and in the wind park sector, multiaxial structures have long been established as textile reinforcement material. The automobile industry, too, is increasingly demanding lightweight construction materials of this nature in order to compensate for the increase in mass resulting from electrification of vehicles (heavy batteries) and from the more stringent safety requirements.

It is likewise known that the construction sector, in the processing of concrete, is one of the major CO2 emitters worldwide: especially with cement [1]. To achieve ecological and political climate targets, a drastic reduction of concrete utilization will therefore be necessary worldwide. Carbon concrete is a key technology to provide a solution for this problem. [1]

In carbon concrete construction, multiaxial structures in the form of lattice-patterned mesh and/or rolled goods are used. Intensive research work conducted at ITM in recent years, in close collaboration with industrial partners, has led to numerous new multiaxial and/or reinforcement structures for the construction industry that are of significant relevance to the precast industry. These include form reinforcement, prefabricated reinforcing cages for slender and lightweight amphibious guidance facilities, and intelligent methods for increasing form closure between reinforcement and concrete that can be manufactured for the first time in a continuous process. This can therefore result in cost efficiency with regard to  reinforcing mesh, which can be manufactured waste-free and with robot support in the precast plant. This presentation is intended to provide an overview of current developments and future trends in the area of textile reinforcement structures used in construction.
