Slim Floor Structure with integrated fire protection solution for prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs with general type approval (aBG)

Did you know that Peikko, together with leading research partners, has carried out an extensive research and testing project on DELTABEAM® composite beams for supporting prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs in slim floor constructions? The focus was on fire protection - a key criterion in building design.
DELTABEAM® is an innovative, slender steel composite beam that can be seamlessly integrated into the ceiling structure. The laterally projecting steel flanges act as a support for the ceiling elements, while the integrated fire reinforcement allows the beam to be used without additional fire protection measures.

The regulations for prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs place high demands on the support. The DAfStb guideline for precast hollow-core slabs also requires direct support in the event of fire. The deflection of the beams must be limited to L/100, considering thermal expansion.
Test series and results
As part of the research project, Peikko investigated the indirect and flexible support of prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs on DELTABEAM® in the event of fire. The aim was to find out if it was possible to utilize 100% of the shear capacity (VRd,c,fi) of prefabricated prestressed concrete slabs in the event of fire when supported on DELTABEAM®. (VRd,c,fi is the shear capacity of rigidly supported pre-stressed concrete slabs in the event of fire according to DIN EN 1168, Annex G). In addition, the aim was to obtain a general type approval from the DIBt in Berlin for DELTABEAM® in combination with all pre-stressed concrete floors available on the European market.
Peikko's test series was successful. The results exceeded expectations in terms of the ductility of the precast prestressed concrete slabs under combined loading, the load transfer to DELTABEAM® and the shear capacity of the tested flexible bearing floor elements in the event of fire.
Successful approval
The general type approval has been granted by the DIBt in Berlin. This means that the Slim Floor Structure with DELTABEAM® and integrated fire protection in combination with prestressed concrete hollow-core slabs has been tested and approved in Germany. There are no comparable approvals in the German market. The approval means that this ceiling system can be quickly tested and approved by test engineers in accordance with building regulations.
White Paper and Video
Peikko has summarized the details of the extensive test program, test setups and full-scale fire tests in a white paper. A video is also available clearly documenting the results.
About DELTABEAM® Slim Floor Structure
DELTABEAM® composite beam is compatible with all floor systems. In combination with other Peikko solutions, the beam can be connected to reinforced concrete, steel, timber or composite columns.
Parking area in a commercial building - DELTABEAM® composite beams in combination with prestressed precast concrete slabs provide plenty of space with few columns.

Slim Floor Structures with DELTABEAM® composite beams and prefabricated prestressed concrete floors allow for shorter construction times, lower construction heights and have a lower dead weight as a complete structure. Serial prefabrication in the factory and the ability to reuse components help to conserve resources. The Slim Floor Structure method also offers maximum design freedom with very flexible floor plans and few columns.
