German airports are subject to stringent safety and security requirements. This also applies to taxiways and runways, which should be accessible for aircraft again soon after heavy rainfall.

Drainage solutions for airport taxiways and runways must withstand enormous loads. Aircraft traffic generates high dynamic forces that act on channel systems and their covers. The stormwater run-off system needs to achieve an exceedingly high hydraulic performance also under extreme conditions, such as after heavy rainfall events. Furthermore, fluids such as fuels or oils that are present in fueling areas must be drained quickly and reliably to mitigate their impact on the environment.
