RStO 12: German “guidelines for the standadisation of pavement structures of traffic areas” in English

Forschungsgesellschaft für Straßen- und Verkehrswesen (FGSV – German Road and Transportation Research Association) has published the English translation 2015 of the RStO edition 2012 entitled “Guidelines for the standardisation of pavement structures of traffic areas”.

The RStO guidelines set out the standard situations for new construction and rehabilitation of standardized pavement structures in rural and urban areas. The purpose of the RStO is to create and maintain a pavement standard for roadways and other traffic areas by using technically appropriate and economical structures. The guidelines are mainly based on the function of the traffic area, the traffic load, the position of the traffic area in the landscape, the subsoil conditions, the type of structure and the condition of the traffic area to be rehabilitated, along with the conditions that result from the location of the traffic area – in a rural or in an urban area. The RStO guidelines are based on experience in the construction and use of pavements for traffic areas, and from research findings and calculations to estimate the performance of the different structures.

The guidelines are available for free downloading at www.fgsv-verlag.de (to be found in the catalog area “Technical Rules” under “Infrastructure management” and there under “499 E PDF”).
