Lightweight concrete with added aerogels as a structural material –

Macroporous lightweight concretes whose thermal insulation effect relies on a certain ratio of air voids in the material are subject to physical limitations that have been virtually exhausted by currently used construction materials. One of the options to dramatically improve the insulation effect of lightweight concrete is to add aerogels as concrete aggregates whose thermal conductivity amounts to 0.012 W/mK, i.e. just half the level of stagnant air, thus being the lowest thermal conductivity ever measured for a solid.
