Ways to climate-neutral concrete block production

In 2022, the project bearing that title was conducted for the German Concrete Association Road, Landscape and Garden Construction (SLG) and in close exchange with the industry. The presentation presents its most important contents. The object of the project is to demonstrate on the basis of model plants ways and measures on the paths to climate neutrality. In this context, measures that can be implemented by 2030 were more closely examined. To support companies in their own decision-making processes, an industry-specific avoidance-cost calculator based on a greenhouse gas balance has been developed and the related documentation (blueprint) prepared and submitted at the end of 2022. In 2023, appropriate training will take place.

The blueprint will serve as model. The individual companies can adapt the avoidance-cost calculator based on the data of the representative model company to their own data. In addition, the topic of Corporate Carbon Footprint will be explained. The carbon footprint is related to the model companies and the emission sources that were jointly agreed on for the project. Possible CO2 costs will be shown, methodology and procedures described as well as the consumption and emission values of the starter balances of the model companies.

The avoidance-cost calculator and its description for the companies for “feeding” with own values will be an essential part. Together with the possible and relevant reduction measures and their quantification under consideration, the related investments and costs will be described. In conclusion, exemplary greenhouse gas reduction paths will be shown.

Blueprint and avoidance-cost calculator will support the companies to enable them to better estimate own risks and opportunities and to adjust to the requirements in climate protection and the regulatory framework conditions.

Finally, current developments in the framework conditions such as reporting obligations, CO2 prices and subsidies will be highlighted.
