Subtle Depth for Striking Architecture: Betogel adds Character to Concrete Surfaces

Exposed concrete thrives on precise surface finishing. With Betogel, Fabrino offers a micro-washout gel that selectively removes the cement skin and evenly exposes the aggregate. This allows for targeted surface design and reproducible results. The process is used in architectural projects such as the James Simon Gallery and the Humboldt Forum in Berlin, among others.

Precision in Design

The dimensionally stable gel acts directly on the surface. Through precisely controlled acid etching, the cement skin is uniformly removed to expose the aggregate in a controlled manner. Unlike mechanical methods, this creates homogeneous structures without blast shadows or irregularities. The result is surfaces with a high-quality appearance. In architectural concrete, it is the subtle nuances that make all the difference. Different levels of intensity define the extent of the exposure. From subtly matte to highly expressive, finishes can be developed that remain consistent whether applied to individual pieces or in series production. The gel’s special consistency also ensures that it remains stable even on vertical surfaces. For designers, this means a high degree of creative freedom combined with reliable execution.

Efficiency Through Streamlined Processes

In addition to surface quality, Betogel helps simplify processes. While traditional blasting methods are energy-intensive and require complex equipment, Betogel reduces complexity: a blasting machine and blasting media are not required, and energy consumption is lowered. Consistent results minimize the need for rework. “Our customers are looking for ways to realize sophisticated designs with high reliability and a precise surface finish,” emphasizes Dr. Klaus Hörmann, Managing Director of Fabrino.

Focus on Safety and Sustainability

According to the company, modern variants are low-odor and corrosion-resistant. Furthermore, the dust pollution associated with mechanical processes is eliminated. This improves working conditions both in the factory and on the construction site. Since the treated surfaces also exhibit natural slip resistance and can be combined with protective systems such as impregnations, the result is durable surfaces.
