Rubin ISC – the Industrial Standard of
Carbon Reinforced Concrete

Making construction more sustainable – that is the challenge! So that this is successful, a fundamental transformation is needed in the construction industry. The material carbon-reinforced concrete makes a substantial contribution in this regard. The immense potentials could be proven in research and in some practical projects. Nevertheless, carbon-reinforced concrete is not yet used in many fields as the preferred material for building structures up to now. In this connection, the “Industrial Standard of Carbon Reinforced Concrete (ISC)” research project was launched in January 2022 being funded as part of the BMBF program “Rubin” (Regional Entrepreneurial Alliances for Innovation). Missing standards and guidelines for using carbon-reinforced concrete in new construction are being drawn up in this project. The ISC will increase the acceptance and the economic efficiency of carbon reinforced concrete. In addition, new fields of application and value chains will be created, firmly establishing carbon-reinforced concrete in the market.

The research project is intended to improve the innovative capacity and the competitiveness, in particular, of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and to initiate processes in structurally weak regions, resulting in profiles that are competitive in the long term. For this reason, the alliance primarily consists of SMEs, supported by practice-oriented research institutes. With the common objective, 13 companies and two research institutes, mainly based in the Dresden and Leipzig areas, joined forces to create the industrial standard of carbon reinforced concrete. To anchor the ISC beyond the region as well, the alliance is supported by a large number of associated partners throughout Germany.

The presnetation will present the current state of the industrial standard, selected research activities and research findings, and will provide an outlook of further activities. It will be demonstrated which benefits the ISC will bring for all of us and how additional partners can get involved.
