More than 10,000 slab track units for Semmering
Base Tunnel

With their MABA Fertigteilindustrie GmbH company, Kirchdorfer Group is participating in the construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel. On behalf of ARGE FF SBT 5.1 consisting of the Porr Group and the Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group, a total of 10,637 slab track units will be produced for the ballastless track in Wöllersdorf near Wiener Neustadt. Start of production will be in 2026. The precast elements will be used on the around 27 kilometers long tunnel section between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag.

Carbon-reduced delivery by rail

Transport will be carried out via the MABA plant’s own railway connection exclusively. In this way, MABA will carry out all deliveries in a climate-conscious way. Choosing this route helps reduce road traffic, cut emissions and noticeably contribute to the sustainability of the overall project.

Karl-Heinz Strauss, Porr CEO, explains: “The delivery of the slab track units by rail from the plant directly provides technical, logistical and ecological advantages. The decision in favor of MABA is based on the experiences gained in joint large-scale projects such as the Koralm Railway. The highest standards are effective in the Semmering Base Tunnel, reliable partners and well-proven logistics structures are decisive here.”

The Semmering Base Tunnel is part of the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor and is one of the most complex infrastructure projects of the ÖBB Infrastruktur AG. The new route will reduce the travel time between Vienna and Graz to less than two hours, it will relieve the historic Semmering railway and increase the capacity of passenger and freight services substantially. The final tunnel breakthrough was in 2024; commissioning is scheduled for 2030.

MABA Fertigteilindustrie GmbH has celebrated their 100-year company anniversary in 2025. The Austrian company with a long tradition is distinguished by experience gained in numerous railway projects in Austria and the DACH region – including the Koralm Railway, Boßler Tunnel and the modernization of the Traisen Valley Railway.
