Maba Fertigteilindustrie awarded EcoVadis Silver 2026
Maba Fertigteilindustrie GmbH, a subsidiary of the Kirchdorfer Group, was once again awarded the silver medal in the EcoVadis sustainability rating in 2026. This means that the precast specialist is among the top 15% of companies rated worldwide.
„The EcoVadis rating is an independent benchmark for us,“ says Franz Buschmüller, Managing Director of Maba Fertigteilindustrie GmbH. „It shows where we stand and where we need to further improve.“
Maba is part of Kirchdorfer Concrete Solutions within the Kirchdorfer Group. The goal is to reduce the CO₂ footprint of precast concrete products by 2030 and increase the use of recycled aggregate.
As a concrete step in this direction, Maba will produce all overhead line and catenary masts with at least 30% recycled aggregate by fall 2026. The use of recycled material will replace over one ton of primary raw material per mast and reduce the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
EcoVadis is an internationally established rating for environmental, social, and corporate governance issues that public contractors and industrial companies use to evaluate their suppliers. This rating is becoming increasingly important for Maba because sustainability indicators are increasingly determining who is invited to tender and who remains in key supplier networks.
Resource conservation in key product lines
Since 2025, overhead line masts made from around 30% recycled aggregate from disused ÖBB concrete masts have been in use on the Traisentalbahn railway line. Their load-bearing capacity has been proven by mast bending tests and accompanying monitoring.
Maba also relies on recycled concrete for noise protection: noise barriers with around 30% recycled content in the base layer are currently being tested in railway operations, with concrete technology support from the Vienna University of Technology and Smart Minerals. These projects provide the data basis with which Maba documents the use of recycled materials, resource savings, and emission reductions and reflects them in environmental product declarations and carbon footprints.
„With every precast element we produce using recycled aggregate and optimized formulations, we save raw materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,“ says Buschmüller. „It is important that we document these effects with EPDs, test reports, and carbon footprints. This makes them reliable for planners and clients.“
Next steps: data, supply chain, recycling
The renewed silver rating shows that Maba has been able to maintain its EcoVadis rating level despite increasing requirements. Against this backdrop, Maba is focusing on three key areas:
More accurately recording and reporting Scope 3 emissions along the supply chain;
Further increasing the proportion of recycled materials in key product lines for rail, road, and noise protection projects;
Systematically anchoring clients‘ sustainability requirements in procurement and supplier evaluation.
„Ratings such as EcoVadis are no substitute for standards or audits. However, they help us to clearly structure sustainability within the company and in the supply chain. For us, silver is less of a trophy and more of a work assignment towards our goals for 2030,“ Buschmüller concludes.
