Innovation: EvoZero

With EvoZero, Heidelberg Materials is launching the world‘s first near-zero cement based on CO₂ capture and storage —a breakthrough for decarbonizing the building materials industry. The innovation is based on carbon capture and storage (CCS), a technology at Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik plant in Norway, that captures CO₂ directly in the production process and then stores it permanently. This means that approximately 400,000 tons of CO₂ are captured there annually using amine scrubbing and then stored 2.6 km below the surface in the seabed. This makes Brevik the first industrial-scale CCS facility in a cement plant worldwide.

EvoZero stands for CO₂ reduction in the production process – without subsequent compensation. The CO₂ savings are digitally traceable and subject to independent verification by DNV Business Assurance Germany GmbH. Every ton of CO₂ captured is recorded centrally, and the use of blockchain technology also ensures that each ton of CO₂ is only transferred once. Customers receive project-specific evidence that transparently demonstrates the CO₂ savings and enables credible communication.

CCS technology does not alter the technical properties of the cement – EvoZero thus offers the full product range from CEM-I to CEM-III and is suitable for all applications. EvoZero is particularly suitable for use in industries such as the precast industry or infrastructure, where CO₂ reduction via conventional levers is only possible to a limited extent. This innovation is therefore not only a technological milestone, but also an important step towards a climate-neutral construction industry.

EvoZero enables customers to implement more sustainable construction projects, strengthen their market position, and actively contribute to the transformation of the construction industry. The combination of technological excellence, digital transparency, and industrial scalability makes EvoZero a true innovation—and a pioneer for the future of construction.
