Concrete as a construction material has an especially high resistance to compression. Concrete shells with a geometry optimized in a way such that primarily compressive forces arise are accordingly structures that can transmit great loads and span large areas with a minimum of material. The expenditure for formwork, however, currently leads to high costs, making their implementation in most cases inefficient.
